The Prophet's Isra'mi'raj

the isra' mi'raj celebration commemorates muhammad's night journey to al-Aqsa mosque in jerusalem and his ascention from there to heaven (qur'an 17:1). the occasion, wich falls on the twenty seventh day on the seventh lunar month, is celebrated by muslims with prayers, sermons on the subject, and a vigil which ends with a banquet for the family and aweets for the children.

the religious meaning of the celebration is islam's recognition that Christiany, judaism, and islam are three religious of one family whose source is one and the God. As the youngest of wold religions, and as one born in the cradle of both judaism and cristianity, islam could not help but relate itself to those two older religions

its theory of prophecy bound islam to recognize the prophethood of the h ebrow prophets as will as of jesus, whose memorien were very much alive in the arabia of Muhammad's timw. the Qur'an mentions many of them and pays particural atention to abraham, jacoc, moses, david, solomon, jonah, and jesus. it identifies them and their folowers as hanifs, that is, arabs who where neither jewis nor cristian, nor adhetente of the makah religion, and yet were held in utmost respect for thirmoral upightness, religion vision, and spirituality. islam had there fore to spesify its relation to them. in celebrating isra' mi'rajh.
muslim acknowledge the great unity of all the prophets.
